Allison's hair
She could have been a Sikh,
the way it kept growing
and her mother told her
she should never ever get it cut.
This in spite of the split-ends
the other girls loved hating.
I loved that hair.
And those hours listening to Phil Collins,
hours of sharing confidences,
hours of pacing the wet neighbourhood
with her, “the friend with the hair”
as my father described her.
So when she catapulted me to Coventry
for the unforgiveable something I had done
which she didn’t explain,
which I never found out,
that hair took centre-stage.
As did Delilah, and Rapunzel’s hag.
