Museum Christmas
Outside J.Bell, Tobacco and Snuff mfr.
snow has fallen. It lies on the sills
of Samuel Harvey, Pewterer
and Peter Pickering, Apothecary,
and on the hat of the coachman
outside W.Barnes, Goldbeater.
The steps of Ebenezer Ellerker, Pawnbroker,
are white with it. It caps the gaslamps,
laces the mullioned windows.
A boar’s head graces a table,
portraits are garlanded with pine,
ivy twines round a four-poster bed.
The glass eyes of the stuffed dog
glint in the firelight. He guards
a fir-tree with real candles.
Head on paws, he warms himself
at the hearth of a past we can’t enter,
however longingly we gaze.
