Iron Way
falling far across bright fields
high white rain
gets bent by the wind
with my Sunday train
via unfamiliar hills
fleeing from an immense rainbow
westering sun
slips over paperbacks
crosswords and plastic cups of drink
mimicking other journeys
taken alone to the brink
of known daylight
a valid return ticket
made out to nightfall
stays safe in my pocket
as time lingers
in the lit coils of a river
and ruffled crows pick at grass
among elms on the skyline
the stump of a rainbow
juts an otherwordly glow
magic or menace
touch-down of a spaceship
or the spilt palette of childhood
the speed never varies
as stations are offered
like hopes then withdrawn
as lamps come on in the scudding houses
and travellers concede the fare is
inclusive of anxiety
eyes twitch from the page
check bags and briefcases
though the detour has meant
unsure hour of arrival
and darkness hides the way
the afternoon’s been spent
