The Joys Of Motoring
For Martin
A Cup A Soup, a tank of Shell and thou
Beside me, driving through the wilderness,
Baking Lincolnshire stretches
Its dreary smug fertility, the bleached
Steeples have nothing left to point at,
The sky is empty, the birds are tangled feathers
On the road.
You say Norfolk is very different but it looks
Exactly the same, the landscape flatly
Refuses to involve me. The heat insists
The weather is never otherwise, that
Summer was here all along and we are
Travelling towards it.
I say nothing, but think of the North
And the people, who are
The salt of the earth. Here, there is no earth,
Only land.
We could buy strawberries but would need
Separate punnets: A sign says
Pick Your Own but that would only
Make it worse.
Tomorrow you leave for Durham, the sun
Has burnt our last, urgent day to a crisp,
I love you
Already across a distance.
