Young in the mystery
three years in this house
rotting floors and dingy walls
where we loved and hurt and grew
kitchen too small for the stove
floor linoleum’s red and yellow
worn to the pitch and board
hole in the wall
where the roaches lived
and the cold came in season
flesh leaves fruits roots
a thousand eggs
some from the chicken coop
in the backyard
there a summer’s storm
felled our garden
bean leaf pushed into soil
okra stem eaten from within
hands and hunger
pots and pans
over the blue flame
where she was wife
and I sometime husband
always boiling word and water
for morning’s instant coffee
never knowing who came before
attic never opened
moldering constellations
unanswered questions
unresolved in our book
from our porch where sky
where wind and wine flowed
