Anglo-Welsh Review (44) 40p. roland mathias, deffrobani, maescelyn, brecon. it seems that this mag gets bigger each issue. 320 pages of poetry, prose, articles & the inevitable reviews. there is bound to be something in here for everyone. huon on the breton language & denez on its literature/welsh missionaries in brittany (!)/ a selection of fine academic type articles including 'notes towards an inquiry into late nineteenth century literary decadence' & 'early welsh reaction to the work of caradoc evans'/ gareth jones on the art of john petts/ etc etc plus poetry from booth/ curtis/ tripp/ bielski/ pettit/ j stuart williams/ b s johnson/ ackerman/ r s thomas/ & many more.
Balthus (1) 20p. jon harvey, 18 cefn rd, cardiff cf4 3hs. a well illustrated & neatly litho printed fantasy mag. features on fantasy heros & the like including a long article complete with maps on
the mythical land of lemuria by jon harvey himself. a good mag but more for the convert than the mildly interested.
The Burnt Manger selected poems 1967-1970 by hugh o connell. rose villa nursery, 158 terrace road, ffynone, Swansea. a collection of medium pace well controlled work which would normally be all i'd have to say - but there are elements in these poems that indicate something else. perhaps greater work to come? read the book for yourself, i think i'm just missing it.
Cardiff People's Paper 2 1/2 sp. 6 clyro place, llanishen, cardiff. qtly fold over sheet that hits the problems & news that the big papers don't, cant or wont use. its informative and its ideals are good ones. i would like to see it come out more often & for its design to be improved.
Country Quest 15p. principality press, wrexham, denbighshire. really a glossy mag for wales & the border counties with such articles as: the chimneys of much wenlock/ stocking reservoirs for trout fishing/ the strange habit of anting/ etc but it does have a poetry section & pays a small fee.
Dragon jenny clanks, old students union, ucw, aberystwyth. a very poor issue compared with the last. nothing sparks anywhere for me. the only thing thats good about it is the production.
Mabon (4) 20p alun jones, cymdeithas y celfyddydau yng ngogledd cymru, 9 wellfield house, bangor, sir gaernarfon. 64 pages of basically anglo-welsh poetry/ articles/ plays/ prose & reviews
connors/ conran/ perry/ bowen/ ackerman/ garlick & others. a sparkling editorial raises the rather difficult problem of direct criticism of the welsh arts council, why, it says, does little exist? the welsh arts council does a good job but like any other bureaucratic body it makes mistakes. why are these never raised in the press? perhaps this editorial will set sparks off in some quarters.
Planet (5/6) 50p. ned thomas, llangeitho, tregaron, cards. the welch equiv of the london mag but with less emphasis on the arts. this issue deals with universities/ common market/ free wales gilfach goch/ welsh highlands/ tenby/ charles olson/ book reviews (which are a little inadequate)/ & poems and short stories from fulton/ b s johnson/ jim williams/ gruffydd/ jarman/ schwenk/ & others. a good read this mag - 142 pages but by now its overall policy should be coming clear yet i'm still not sure what it is - each new issue brings its surprises.
no 7 30p. peace & freedom/ revolution/ liberation/ nationalism/ plus a very unusual poem by raymond garlick -'documentary' a long piece that shows a freedom of style rare for garlick.
Poetry Wales (vol 6 no 4) 25p. meic stephens, 42 church rd, whitchurch, Cardiff. a very neat 70 pages of anglo-welsh & welch poetry plus reviews. i sometimes wonder if the changes in the anglo-welsh scene shape poetry wales or if it shapes them. adams/ tripp/ ormond/ etc.
(vol 7 no 1) a new format with spine binding, a new cover, 92 pages and a new price of 38p poetry wales joins the big ones - an improved look all round. incl: parr/ rs thomas/ norris etc.
The Province of Belief by john tripp. £1.05. christopher davies, llandybie, carms. john tripps second major collection sees a flash back over the last 5 years selecting his best poems from booklets, mags and mss. john tripp is as welsh as they come, its in his poems again and again- the history of wales, the current scene, roaring comments on the stupidity of much that happens to the country, its administrators and its people. i really enjoyed reading this set - tripp is not a difficult poet but thats not to say he has no depth - politics & humour, being a poet & its problems, people, places, events - hacked & formed with tripps very individual style & cunning use of
phrase. a very good book that proves that anglo-welch writing is not always a short cut to boredom.
Rumpus (6) l0p plus postage. the final issue of this magazine due very soon. no more contributions needed but orders sought. to include: carr/ curtis/ booth/ jaffin/ cashford/ tripp/ steane/ garlick etc etc from chris morgan, 58 llandennis road, roath park, cardiff.
Streaked Tulip (1) david warrall, st davids college, lampeter, cards. an attempt to be different that doesnt come off. a badly duplicated mag fixed inside a large cardboard cover covered with
bits of coloured paper. makes it very hard to read. content i guess is the welch dada movement at last. 40 years to late done this way. poems/prose in welsh & english.
Whats On free monthly information sheet for the cardiff area. mimeo & distribution by RIB, a free telephone info and help service (cardiff 44441) 58 charles st, cardiff. RIB offices offer cheap coffee/ magazines to buy/ notices to read & the like. they do a good job but are short of cash. so anyone with some to spare....
