Brian Lewis: The Halt
The halt is drawn from a series of walks and prints realised between
2000 and 2002. Its course is lost in the wayside of Greater London,
but has its origins in a line that opens near Heathrow in the west and
closes at Rainham in the east. The line is broken by the city's obstacles, its temporary, unplanned features, the road works and site works that wear away at public footpaths and force their abandonment. It is difficult to test a right of way that has drifted from municipal bounds to the discretion of a private contract; the interrupted path belongs to neither, but is heavy with the stuff of deterrence, signs and screens restrictive in intent and effect. The halt, which comprises fifteen prints in its full version, is marked by these interventions.
Brian Lewis lives in Swindon. Some of his prints are featured in this
issue of Staple and in Staple 59.
