Edmund Prestwich
April Light
The storm’s switched off.
Under a low dark sky
a magpie struggles up through the air
like a legless man on a flight of stairs.
Briefly the dead light
goes lurid yellow.
Hailstones glitter on roofs
like drifts of dirty blossom under hedges.
Neither my ears’ own hissing
nor the noise of traffic pauses.
In the gloom behind windows
television sets burn blue;
but in one, spotlit,
a carrier bag gleams white
as if an angel, sculpted in light,
hovered on brilliant wings.
