There and Back Again
One road leads to London,
One road leads to the sea ....
Was that how it went? And one road leads
from the stony workaday school to the top of the lane.
The little boy who lives down there, and takes
the nursery rhyme to heart, has roads on his mind
as he scampers homeward, trying to remember ....
And East and West the wanderthirst
That will not let me be.
It works in me like magic, dear ....
Those trips to the grey North Sea? Home was truly
where the heart was, and art has its unfathomable roots:
that rutted dirt track, three score and ten miles long,
and the tiny White Cottage - off-white, mere yards - were
more magical than any Babylon. Come candle-time, all roads
lead back to home, to the peeling door, but stout enough
to shut out demons. Never again so safe, or so secure.
