Yes, invitations were sent, posted down under,
no haste. Now they gather. This first class community
parties on my lawn, spring after spring, adheres to strict
dress code, purple, yellow, violet, white; yet is ready
to burst into full mardi-gras at the slightest chance
of sun, to waggle fluffy orange or silky yellow
tongues at the passing buzz of communication,
squabbling sparrows add some razzmatazz.
Heads up, baby beaked wide, each drinks a hollow cup
of light and shade, revels in the moment; a fragile few,
hearts closed, flop down, soft bruises on green earth,
pink snow of cherry masks an indifference. The sun sets.
Tonight they button up tight against the crisp dark,
a new moon slings up his yellow hammock.
