Solo Survivors is one of the best magazines to come out of the Midlands for a long time. Edited by the energetic and enthusiastic John Hirst, the magazine is going from strength to strength and attracting many excellent poets while encouraging the first timer. Every issue is packed with poems but they are always presented in a careful and caring way. The covers of the magazines are often stunning and the poems within a glorious variety of styles and subject matter. There were so many poems that I enjoyed but space does not allow me to show them all. Poets who impressed were Michael Newman, Ken Champion, Eileen Carrey Hulme and Bruce McRae. My favourite poem however in this issue was “First Kiss” by Elin Ryder – a very moving and lyrical poem which I read several times, always finding something else in it to enjoy. This the last three lines –
“The light outside my window dulls
And all across the world I see,
My lips, poised in dull expectancy.”
Solo Survivors is highly recommended.
