Return from the tropics
The displacement of birthplace, north.
A mesh of frost and tree-bones
on this window I live behind
my heart a red salmon
landlocked in ice.
Longing steers south,
climbs latitude’s painful ladder,
the sea’s cut glass
but the red point of the compass
says blood is here
under the sky’s lead bell
and monochrome kiss
daylight catching rivers coins
in cold flickering hands.
Inside, I am a prism
of poinsettia and palm,
bird-of-paradise flower beaked orange
while the fire-horse climbing
blue mountains of air
tanning our flesh with the rage of his breath,
dwindles.
His eye shrinks to a snow-god,
the white-haired sun.
