Labyrinthitis
(infection of the inner ear)
After your dream of bread
and the loaf you found proving
in the cellar kitchen,
you woke afraid to turn yourself
from the tilting I of the storm,
sudden pins in the eiderdown’s snow.
I go about the house on tiptoe,
making dinner, folding clothes,
scour the dazzling hedgerows
of supermarkets for medicines and phials;
dream in the room next to you
of the stepping stones of white bread
lost behind me as a child
from the first loaf I brought home,
how to find them, where they led.
And of offerings left sealed
to the windowsill by hoar frost,
the first few grains of Bryonia
melting on your tongue.
