This Woman
This woman I know sits on a high mountain
Dominating everything she sees. Stretching up
To planets and throwing them in turbulent seas.
She gathers strange spices to marinade the Sunday
lunch.
Gouges the earth for salad crisp as frost.
She leaves a small snail trail of half read books,
She is a lonely orphan, keening in mephistic air.
Calling on the wind to clear a space.
Crouching in the corner of a landscape hoping
To be found and left forgotten in the pocket
Of a giant who carries her home to press
Between his heavy books. She will be mounted
In a tiny frame then discarded in a drawer
Discovered by tall children who peer at
Her hurt face and frozen looks.
She is a poor specimen who rises only at night.
No one sees her dragon flight.
This woman I know lives in the suburbs
Making patchwork. Clings to love and
Folds into a man who makes her warm.
In the first morning light a child crawls
Into her bed and sleeps in her arms.
