'My creativity has helped me...'
Lucinda Munday interviews Roy Peters
Describe yourself
My name is Roy; I live at Portishead House in Westminster. I have been here for three years and one month. I am well built, not being arrogant but I have been described as good looking in recent years. My strengths are creative writing and poetry. I love cooking and listening to the radio. I love Heart FM- I like the musical variety. They play old and new like The Jacksons and Adele.
What are your ambitions?
I would love to be an established writer. My first novel didn’t really sell, but I’m hoping to have written my second novel “Duel Quest of the Mortals” by 2012. I would love to record my song lyrics. I would like to form a boy band of mentally disabled people. It would be multinational. I would call it Royston or New Foundations. It would be great to sing with Emma Bunton. I would like to speak to Simon Cowell about this!
Who are your heroes?
Spiritually my heroes are Jehovah and Sun Christ Jesus. My other heroes are JK Rowling and Philip Pullman. They are my literary parents! I admire JK Rowling as she was a single parent who suffered depression but struggled through it to do her writing. She is an inspiration to me. I admire Michael Jackson – Thriller, Bad and Off The Wall were world class. It’s a shame he changed.
What are your top tips for good mental health?
Having spirituality has helped me recover. Church can be like an extended family. It’s important not to rely just on medication. You can find yourself in a routine of medication, eat, sleep and not much else. It’s important to have creativity. My creativity has helped me with my struggles. Being honest about my mental health has helped. In the past I sometimes covered it up. Now I can talk to my brothers and they make me feel better. I think taking responsibility is important. Doing things in the community. Portishead House is being deregistered and that will make us live more independently.
Thank you Roy!
