Caroline Davies
Disappeared
In one version of the story
he returns home to Ireland,
after a lifetime of hard
labour in England, to the bosom
of his family.
In the other version he is prone
to drink, so much so by age
forty four he is unable
to dry out. Instead he walks
the endless streets, looking
for a quiet place to lie down and sleep.
In a final version, he finds work
in the docklands, but the quiet spaces
elude him. So one night after everyone
has gone home, he walks
out along the girders, pauses a moment
against the skyline before he disappears.
