He grips the bottle.
Mumbles something about
his old teaching days.
Wants me to write
his life story.
The dog by his side
suddenly licks my shoe.
The snow begins to fall
a little heavier.
I begin to feel uncomfortable.
Tell him I’m a poet
not a writer as such.
He picks up his guitar
strums a Beatles riff.
Downs more whisky
insists I write his story.
Tells me his band
once supported the Stones.
I tell him I’m a poet
and that I don’t write books.
For a moment I think
he might turn violent
but he sinks more whisky
starts to play Hendrix.
I drop a few coins
turn my collar up to the snow
and blend back in with the crowd.
