Void
I have worn them smooth,
Time-weathered and faint,
Those once sustaining memories;
Frayed and faded their outlines
In the searching, bleaching light
Of all too frequent use.
I can but dimly see,
Can scarcely find the line
Of former fine-etched images;
Lost are the moods of place,
Shapes and tastes of times,
Of spaces shared with you.
Faded the feel of rain
Through which we'd walked
And cooled the sun which warmed us;
Gone is the chill of snow
On hills where we had stood,
All shared sensations dead.
Only the void is left,
Only the ghost of loss,
Only the reawakening pain
When echoes stir my sleep.
Only the thought of 'Once..'
Only the noted date,
Only the passage of now empty time.
