Cat Punctuation
A cat is coming
down the springboard
flight of stairs
from you to me.
Calmly it punctuates
its own descent
with colons, semi-colons,
I don’t know - they lollop
down in single thuds
done double or else
in mere succession
trippingly.
They are, therefore they eat.
I can’t resist
their passionate entailments,
nor their sinuosity,
their foreheads’ nudge and warmth
(colon here) there opens up
a meaty can
of consequences, rights, rewards
and something about love
I’d rather not contemplate.
One thing after another
is what I say.
It happens that a cat
has poured the thick
black oil of itself
into a chair (semi-
colon here) it happens
that I love you.
