Lament of the Foolish Monkey
How strange to think that we should lose our way.
I never dreamed that such a thing might be.
So bright and wide the path! How could we stray?
We were cocksure, convinced we’d win the day,
our hearts and minds intent on victory.

Though there were those who said, in time, we’d pay,
who counselled prudence, patience, wait and see,
we were cocksure, convinced we’d win the day.
Our strategy was simple, you might say:
whatever could be had, we took for free;

We’d neither count the cost nor brook delay:
smart monkey want whatever monkey see.

Now much older, all our dreams in disarray,
we regret the signs we passed so carelessly.
