Firewriting and Other Poems by John Muckle
(Shearsman Books, 58 Velwell Road, Exeter, EX4 4LD, £9.95, ISBN 0907562647, A5, 130pp, perfectbound)
Wears his credentials on his sleeve: the cover’s a photo by Tom Raworth, there’s a sequence based on experiences as a carer in the mental health system and a good, long poem in response to the Miners’ Strike and in "Boys from the South Country", "...Poetry and myth continued to flourish/ in the dark ages of my construction/ for the works of Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs/ were achieving considerable circulation./ I decided to being recording the tape of my future life/ because I had no past to speak of or cut to
ribbons..." but doesn’t need to. There’s a writer in here. Although the price is good value, the volume might have been more slender. I don’t want to cut every poem into the forty line magazine poem, but now and again a bit of baggage could have been left in a locker.
