Peter Gibson
In Moscow
The bitter wind is leaden, apocryphal with snow
as we drive, dazed with cold, down Moskva Street.
Stopping at traffic lights an old woman approaches
begging for coins, for food, for anything -
I give her worthless roubles and she turns away:
her history is a grey hand on a car window,
the print smearing, dissipating -
Further on, white in the glow of a billboard
a tall child, a young girl posing sexless
in long boots and a sixties mini-skirt;
her half-lit smile, Mona Lisa Slavonic.
My driver sniggers and turns up the heater
and a patient anger crawls through me like frost.
The lights turn from red to green.
