From February 20th for 12 weeks BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting A Map of British Poetry. The series has been created by Andrew Motion who has taken pains to find good readers, often with regional accents, as appropriate. He mentioned in particular a reading by Simon Russell Beale as being one of the best readings he has ever heard other readers include Juliet Stevenson and Tom Courtney. Broadcast Sundays at 4.30 [and presumably also on www.bbc.co.uk/radiofour ]
Andrew Motion said that the he thought the best love poem in English is part of Sir Thomas Wyatt’s “They flee from me…”
Thancked be fortune, it hath beene othrewise
Twenty times better; but ons in speciall
In thyne arraye after a pleasaunt gyse,
When her lose gowne from he shoulders did fall,
And she me caught in her armes long and small;
Therewithall swetely me kysse,
And softly saide, dere heart, how like you this?
