A surprisingly fine mag, & superbly produced. Good-ish symposium on problems of publishing today, with an intelligent article on poetry by Blake Morrison, despite his M.O.R. stance (he’s poetry editor of TLS, which has been notably more open to small presses since his arrival.)

Grosseteste Review Vol. 13 (1980-1981) ed Tim Longville. Available from 6 Henconner Crescent, Leeds, Yorkshire LS7 3NS, England. Splendid, though possibly the last issue of a magazine that’s always been among the best in the UK. It would be sad if it went under after 13 years, just because the grant was withdrawn. Highlights: Rakosi, Chaloner, Klein-zahler, Middleton, Bronk, Richard Emil Braun, & Peter Robinson on Roy Fisher’s POEMS 1955-1980.

Iron #32, ed. Peter Mortimer, 5 Marden Terrace, Cullercoats N. Shields. Tyne & Wear NE30 4PD ngland. 70p. Excellent production, as usual. A fine example of what a middle of the road little magazine can be. And I don’t mean MOR pejoratively. The only familiar names in the issue (to me at least) arc Kris Hemensley, and me.

Kudos #8 ed. Graham Sykes, 78 Easterly Road, Leeds LS8 3AN, West Yorkshire England. 75p. Good quality production heralds a very readable issue - Yann Lovelock, Peter Robinson & Michael Hulse are among the contributors. Also there are some unusual translations from Chinese & Walloon

Palantir #l7 ed Jim Burns, 7 Ryelands Crescent, Larches Estate, Preston, Lancashire, England. 50p. - excellent as usual. Poems by Martin Anderson, Edwin Brock, plus translations of Frantisek Halas (Czech) & George Bacovia (Romanian) Reviews & comment are of their usual high quality

Text #12 ed Mark Karlins & Bruce MeClelland, $4.00 - something of a who’s who of the US vanguard, including Rothenberg, Schwerner, Kelly, Eshleman, Sobin, Perlman, Evans, Perchik, Eigner, Metcalf, Lansing. Sobin, Eigner & Evans much the best. It’s a strangely unsettling issue, that doesn’t really work at any level - very unsettling, difficult to read & ultimately rather tedious. Strange. But it’s the last issue.
