Fugue
The naked string cuts silence,
an unopened bud vibrating in its flower of need
like leaf-crossed lovers, twig-bound,
a closed hand opening, an arched foot extending,
the thighs of desire climbing in the dark.
A theme of linear purity,
tired of being alone, emerges into light,
reckoning it can go anywhere now.
Coupling with others, it transposes
black to white, earth to fire, brings
sweetmeats and bitter leaves
to those expecting bread. The worm
has eaten the mulberry leaf, becomes
silk thread, woven strand, revolutionary
tapestry, only to unwind from the miraculous
intentional flaw, leaving perfection behind.
Finally, like a black plum in a blue bowl,
the music shrinks into pit, becomes again
the core of itself. Stretto finished,
the string stills.
