A Study For The Badminton Game

Presentiment even here -
in the surrealist height of the trees,
the suspended shuttlecock,
the windless landscape.
From the observatory
at the top of the tall house,
you can see the bright unease
of banners above the topiary;
the yew-alley
going down to the river;
the pared moon,
the clipped pyramid.
How silently they play,
the girls on the lawn;
a guest clutches her garden party hat -
Ophelia floats by.
Why is it
we watch the distraught
from the sunlit roof
with such terrible detachment?
