Hazel Hills
Tone Poem: Networking Sleeping Partner
She has been here before:
she notes how quickly he answers the telephone
quietly pulling the door to behind him.
Half an hour later he re-enters their living room.
"Another business call," he says.
She has a good ear for music:
through hearing only one half of his melody
she has become well practised in his art
of pitch and modulation,
his key changes.
Now she awaits his announcement
that the next day after work
he has an urgent interface.
The subsequent telephone call
will need a stay-away:
"to obviate the double journey in a day".
She has been here before.
Too easily can counterpoint
his theme and variations.
Patiently adept, she waits till he goes out
then lifts the handset, dials, and in her mind
begins to phrase her overture with strings.
