University Botanical Gardens, Helsinki
Like some frozen Eden the glass pavillion
stands beyond the black silhouettes of trees.
Pale orange and yellow lights glow inside
and a lawn of snow lies outside.
The lights suggest an oasis of warmth
beneath the gently curving glass roof.
Yet I resist the temptation to go in,
outside in the snow is my habitat.
It would be easy to surrender
to that mirage of luxury, to abandon
this near torpid lifestyle, this slow
frozen tramp through winter.
I turn my back on this paradise,
look winter square in the face,
then I lower my frost-bitten gaze
and trudge wearily on.
