Threatening At Any Moment To Blush
The girl is telling me she doesn’t like
poetry, not really, not much, only
Brian Patten, John Cooper-Clarke and Joolz
and now me. This is new and exciting,
to be signing books for girls just left school
unsure yet how to hold a cigarette
and a half-lager in. the same small hand.
I finish with a flourish, and then x,
and the girl stays a while, smiling a lot,
blushing a lot, glimpses of a party
I reckon I’d be happy to gatecrash.
But I stay sober in the face of it,
as though someone had tapped on my shoulder
to whisper, ‘Hey, you’re a married man, now.’
Which is what happened, more or less.
