St Keyne’s Well: Spring
The evening light slants across the garden:
on the soft viridian shades of late spring lingers
the cool afterglow of the May-time sun.
The dark pink of valerian froths up from the walls
interspersed with moon-penny daisies and ivy-leaved toadflax:
the enchanted world awakens.
The lanes are full of ferns unravelling, hedge-parsley after rain;
bluebell and campion, buttercup and stitchwort
stud the roadside tapestry of woven greens.
Though the footprints are silent on the ancient trackways,
The moss-covered well at the crossroads
still pours out healing water;
Though the cities of learning are silted up with ignorance
wild flowers still bloom around the island sanctuary:
the stories and stones remain.
