Never No Lament
Feel the cold fingers of dawn.
The sounds of last night remain. They are here, but thinner, frozen. Here until the warming sun melts them away, making way for what will come tonight.
Sounds all at odd angles. Circus music, wedding songs.
An accordion and saxophone.
People don’t pay up and the accordion wanders away. Now a lone saxophone to sound sad.
Below my window stands a girl. I had passed her on my way in. Obsidian to be
hammered into a ring, her brown eyes were so dark as to hide the pupils.
Hide in plain sight.
The sad song reminds her of something. She looks in the direction of the horn, but she doesn’t really
see him. Her mind is elsewhere.
Long after he has gone she stands there.
Glass in hand, I lean out my window and watch her.
It is not fair for me to get something from her sorrow, but it is the way of the
world.
This morning I half expected to see her standing there. I look, and again on my
way for coffee too.
All I find is a scrap of paper with an address written on it and a ticket
