Renewal
The infant’s weight warm in her arms
assures her of life’s continuance.
The new, fresh smell of him
fills her love sore breasts.
Her inner tide surges
for the quickness
of another child.
Below her heart, and whilst she guides
the living chick-downed head to his place
above her life pulse she feels his mouth
tug and fix with infant greed.
As she lifts her regard to meet his father’s
the look they share is amazed with joy
in this boy, their procreation;
and is lit with the wonder of what might again
so sweet-piercingly occur
when their firstborn’s settled into sleep.
