As a student at Leeds College of Art I discovered a way of creating distraction/accident rather than intent; small objects which took my fancy were assembled into art works (pins piercing a film of Vaseline, a wedding-cake-man sunk in a tin of oxblood shoe polish). In my final term I took up etching (drawing was my first love) and when I moved to London, ran Apollo Etching Studio and exhibited my etchings in various galleries. I was fascinated by the detail I could achieve drawing with a needle into a fine layer of wax and by the reversal of the original image. My process was to begin, no conscious idea in mind - one line leading to another. There are analogies here with my writing process. After I divorced (in my new life) I began to write - fragments, snippets - not realising at first they were poems. Many of my poems related directly to my visual art. The connection continues as I become increasingly interested in working intuitively and in striving to define the twists and turns of thinking - a sense of 'nowness' interacting with the more tangible,
observational content (akin to the detail of the etchings). I am currently working on a series of prose poems; a poem triggered by an object, a piece of furniture, an impulse, the feeling behind an
image. My poems have been published in various magazines and in the Poetry School anthology Entering the Tapestry.
