Sky boats – after Medbh McGuckian (sort of)
An aeroplane caught in the branches of a tree,
struggling over North Belfast’s Waterworks,
makes for the open water of the sky.
There is white foam following in this aeroplane’s wake
as white plumes follow the yachts across the bay
at Nice and Cannes – and break for an horizon
so indistinct – so blue the sky and sea –
today, we think, the world is upside-down…

Leontia Flynn was born in 1974 and lectures at Queen’s University, Belfast. Her first collection, These Days (Cape, 2004), won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. She was selected as a Next Generation Poet in 2004.
