Language, Translation and Interpretation
Another issue to celebrate, especially for me. On a visit to Prague some 20 years ago I became interested in the story of the Golem, a kind of Automaton made from clay to protect the hard pressed Jewish community of the 17th century. Strange to relate although this story ends in disaster for the Golem he had become a symbol of the city after the velvet revolution, challenged only in status by the artful, or maybe gormless, Good Soldier Svejk. Anyway I was eventually moved to write in Comish and my poem is presented in this issue accompanied by my own English version and by a marvellous Yiddish tranlation by Hirsche Dovid Meinkes, a scholar and writer who divides his life between Lithuania and Wales.
We also are lucky to have some charming poems from Betsy Bogert Moelders, an American living in Germany and writing in beautiful French, surely what this section is about. Enjoy, I’m off to see old comrades in Wrexham and then on to the Eisteddfod in Bala to soak in the living waters of Welsh culture.
