Terra Incognita, Terra Infirma
The map of her might be blue,
desire pooling darker than water at night,
only the occasional moon for clues.
The doctors chart their questions:
cloud, stone, magnolia.
She wants to say, I wanted that
and mean garden, palm tree, dog.
Hunger looks more like an ink blot.
What do you see in this? Ecstasy.
Waltz. Fog.
The clutch in her chest flutters,
close to the thump and press.
Tremors rise and vanish,
hard to explain. Hours drain.
Swallow. Sorrow. Star.
She wants to bend and whisper,
grass in a sage-laden wind.
Joannie Stangeland’s chapbook Weathered Steps was published by Rose Alley Press. A Steady Longing for Flight won the Floating Bridge Press Chapbook Award. Her poems have also appeared in print journals, online, and on the bus.
