The Humming
It wasn’t there, not in the beginning
when the valley went quiet
and raging
was left to the river, its waters springing
over stones,
not with the usual murmur
that soothed babies brought by mothers
fraught
with their incessant crying,
but with an insistence, a sound carried
on the rising wind and perhaps it was this
that distracted us –
but no, it wasn’t there then
and we didn’t notice it till it had left us
singing lullabies in a hurricane.
