today in the waters of
your mother’s womb,
just nine weeks old,
two inches long, waving
new hands and feet at us
from the dark universe
of an ultrasound screen.
Now the placenta has to
come into being, connect
you to the life of your
mother. The next two
weeks are crucial, the
doctor said, and it seemed
fate might cut you away
before the moment of completion,
as if we could not believe
nature would take its course
or be on our side this once.
