Remember Remember
a damp November evening
and a country lane
barely visible
in the darkness.
Stumbling,
you decided
that you would,
after all,
hold my hand.
So we walked
down Uncleby Hill,
the cold air
which crept
around us
heavy with decay
yet piquant too
with the memory
of past autumns,
of winters
which had nurtured
the seeds
of another spring.
Across the valley
in Kirby Underdale
we could hear
muffled voices and,
as we drew nearer,
see the shadowed
outlines of men
and children
trying to make
wet wood burn.
At last the sparks
began to catch
and flames
threw into dramatic relief
the bare branches
of a nearby ash tree.
Warmed by mulled wine
and hot dogs
and the pleasure
in simply being there,
we laughed excitedly
as the fireworks began
and rocket after rocket,
colours brilliant,
brief,
soared comet-like
across the night sky.
