David Aronson
David Aronson’s hairy dismembered creatures touch on the pornography of cruelty and lip smacking voyeurism that has reached the depravity of Abu Ghraib-prison (they were always present as anybody knows who has had to spend a sweat banded night in a Middle Eastern jail) which in turn comes from a long generation of the prison culture of the United States. All of this is part of the new fundamentalist ‘born-again’ Christian culture — with its parallels in the Islamic world. Bill Holdsworth
Between A.D.’s “Lookin for Love…” and Kelly’s callipygian Congo Queen, had a bad case of jungle fever. Was sporting wood like Aronson’s jiz hound. By the way, like his styling; somebody knows their arcade comics; S. Clay Wilson in one hand, R. Crumb in the other. (Tho’ still say AM unknowingly wrote the birth certificate on underground cartooning—or was one of the original signers.) Robert Peters
David Aronson’s graphics are a pure joy. Reminiscent of the incisive and iconoclastic cartoons of a great alternative publishing era. I’m also old enough to remember that this underground was infiltrated and hijacked by puritanical seventies feminists, authoritarian socialists and religious fundamentalists of all kinds. They soon sanitised and emasculated many papers and magazines by cutting off their cartoon balls and graphic clits. In the face of contemporary Islamic prudery — sex bookshop torching and physical attacks on active homosexuals and female sex workers — I’m hoping for a renaissance of drawings in the Robert Crumb tradition.
