Breakdown
We’d always made the journey
at night in father’s Humber Hawk.
The back seat broad enough for me
to feign sleep beneath a blanket.
Morning trees stretched
across sky like skeletons,
until the Morris Minor became so hot,
we were forced to stop,
where we could almost touch the clouds.
I was glad the skylarks harmonised
like a choir to fill the silence,
for something in her face
told me not to speak.
I ran through heather and wire grass,
black eyed sheep darting away
with a wave of tails.
She paced the road.
A stream shone like the solitaire
she twisted around her finger.
It was just mother
and I who left the city, to cross
the Dinas Mawddwy Pass in daylight.
