Picking Mint
Not the sharp-leaved spearmint
but furry applemint.
A sprig held to my nose
on the way back to the kitchen.
Hardly necessity, almost
an absurdity, on days
when I have to bolt
between the showers, dodging
dripping elder, stupidly
getting shoes wet, to dash
back, find the pan
rattling its lid,
over-boiling, and pop in
the infusion, a minute
too late. But ritual,
linking memory, smell,
fingers: this pungency,
chopped, and staining,
used for al fresco tea -
with slices of moss, leaf plates
and puddle water from the kettle -
the mixture floating,
green, exotic
in tiny china cups.
