Fred Beake
Elegy
Disdain not the valour of young men who go
to war, knowing the consequence
and return with sordid nightmares in their souls
having done hard things, that evil
might not flourish, and dark shadows fall.
And if some revelled in the adventure
and wandered out of their way by the gorges of death
that was always the right of the young.
And if this death or that was harsh or pointless
do not talk too easily of waste.
