Blue Is Rare
The tumble of undercliff, rucked with a Colony
of many greens, occasionally cream with elder,
butts into a tall tilt of chalk cliff, shrubbed
and grassy on all possible slopes, capped here,
gully-streaked there, with smears of rufous soil.
An unseen woodpecker chortles. A train carves by.
A ferry churns out of the port. Starling’s egg sky.
On shingle tongues we sift ridges for shards
of worn glass, raw material for your work,
mosaics, placed fragments curving imagination
into landscapes. The Channel’s steady swash.
There’s no end of green and clear, a good smattering
of brown, an odd sliver of burgundy. We fill a bag,
amble back to the tent, sun-dozing. These years.
Evening, the sun hardly gone from its final beacon,
the Martello Tower on Copt Point. Twenty five miles
across black sea France becomes a flickering star-line.
Working over the spoils, among abraded greens,
fingering the curves of crazed clear pebbles and
deep browns, you look up, say: “Blue is rare.”
