Creating Environments for Living
When the glass exploded in her hand,
so early in the morning that she hadn’t
had time to dress, she simply looked around
to see where all the pieces had gone.
A few got caught in her dressing gown,
sleeves rolled up, kimono style from Habitat,
and the rest sprinkled itself like cracked cocktail ice
across the stripped pine floor of the kitchen.
The spread was surprisingly even, she thought,
as she began to count the pieces which had
landed on top of her cold bare feet.
A cheap glass from a package of six.
Breaking won’t matter, she’d thought,
while shopping, filling her over-the-arm wire basket
with well designed practical household ware.
Lucky, she thought, none of it’s under my feet.
But the question of the next step froze her.
