Michell Raper
The Garden
Autumn corrupts her garden. She will be distressed ;
so much has not been for the best.
This privet grown so dense, to hide
where young in leaf
the friend's clear face was trimmed,
and gryphon with stiff
poultry wings. And there'd be hammocks here
above the pond,
but that her lazy sons have left, beyond
the range of tears.
And in the closed walks of her conversation
lost are the shears that might have trimmed
this glut of leaf, and shown the dream's
fine edge, contours of common day.
And she will trust
the alchemic fog's equation,
smiling to see how true and false converge
leisurely in the dusk.
