Morning Coffee

Coffee-colour stain on the horizon line -
guess this morning’s mist and filtered sun
are brewing something up for me

            so I grind fresh coffee beans -

Cloudless - the rest of the sky - just haze
intensifying the heat of the sun. Fishing boats
not shifting on the silver foil sea - in black
relief they stand proud, hints of rigging idling -

            put them in the silver pot,
            fill it with Aqua-Pura,

I see a single motor boat purring west to east
slaloming a route through the fishing course -

            place it on the ring

I watch it turn, begin heading home -
on the groynes stand sentinel gulls
almost in the water -

            and light the flame.

I see you wave from fifty yards. I wander
down the slip. As you land I tie the rope -
hand-in-hand we make our way to my cabin -

            aroma of fresh coffee,
            salt taste of your skin
            but without bitterness

without regret.
