Goodbye
When I heard you
claw at the divide line
of our stubborn minds,
I witheld an urge
to smash the wall immediately
in a frenzied gust
of anger and hope,
I was frightened
that the avalanche
would make you turn heel
and run
like a threatened animal.
So I tried to reach you
another way.
With light-hearted patience
I removed
first one brick,
then another, slowly,
with care,
quickening only in response
to your occasional, urgent cries.
But now that I am close enough
to touch you,
you back away, uncomfortable
in the realization
that if you come with me
you’ll be severed from your past
forever. I understand,
but understanding is not enough,
for I am matter
as well as mind,
and my body has grown weary
from working so hard,
so long.
