Andrea Roe studied art at Edinburgh and Chelsea and now lives and works in Edinburgh. Her work examines the nature of human and animal biology, behaviour and communication and is designed to awaken experiences of wonder in nature, science and folklore. Through photography, film and installation, her aim is to translate scientific research on the psychology of animal behaviour into artworks that are experienced physically as unfamiliar, visceral sensory encounters.
The cover image, Solar Eggs, was produced in 2006 during a Leverhulme Trust Residency at the National Museums of Scotland where Andrea was based for a year working within Natural Sciences. The duck eggs were blown clean, as in museum egg collections, and LED lights inserted into the shells. 'Candling' a process used in bird breeding is referred to here; shining a bright light through the shell determines the fertility of an egg.
Recent experiments have resulted in natural world modifications of eggs, birds and fungi using animatronics to explore the 'hyper-real'. The works are often triggered by the viewer or respond to the environment, as shown with Solar Eggs, which are charged daily via a solar panel so that they magically glow at night. The images that follow mix documentary photographs of hidden museum collections with examples of the artist’s own work.
Enquiries about purchase or commissions are welcome, and can be forwarded to Andrea via Staple.
