Passion Play
Pathetic, I know, at my age to act
like this, compare gifts and assess how well
my paper roses - versus his live flowers -
audition for your affections. In spite
of myself, differences do spring to mind:
today I am upstaged by "natural" blooms'
fragile designs (still artful, might I add);
they'll hog the limelight, I concede, a while.
But when the first petals begin to curl
dark brown, and shrivel; as you sweep away
those blooms cast down; observe fair-weather beauty,
how it can turn. And know the constant grace
my man-made roses own, my angel; thus
my faith that - given time - they'll steal the show.
